Choosing the Right Puppy For You & Your Family

Bringing a puppy into your life is an exciting decision, but it's also one that requires careful consideration. Puppies are a long-term commitment, and choosing the right one is essential to ensuring both you and your new pet thrive. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting your perfect pup.

Breed and Size

Each breed comes with its own unique set of traits, energy levels, and physical needs. For instance:

ree

  • High-energy breeds like Border Collies and Labrador Retrievers thrive in active homes with ample time for exercise, training, and mental stimulation.

  • Lower-energy breeds such as Bulldogs or Basset Hounds may be better suited to quieter lifestyles.

  • Consider their adult size too: All tiny puppies are cute and manageable, but a fully grown Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will have very different needs from a Great Dane!

Mixed-breed dogs can also make fantastic companions, often boasting diverse, balanced traits. I always recommend that you research the breed and the breeds in their lineage to understand what the dog was bred to do, identify common challenges, and assess whether this seems suitable for you and your family.

Energy Levels and Exercise Requirements

Your puppy’s energy levels should match your lifestyle. A high-energy dog may require multiple walks, specialist training, or play sessions more regularly, while a more laid-back breed may be content with shorter walks and lower energy play sessions. All breeds require at a minimum fun play, basic training, and regular mental stimulation.

Grooming Needs

Some breeds, like Poodles, require regular professional grooming, while others, like Beagles, may only need occasional brushing and nail trimming. Grooming isn’t just about looks, though. It’s essential for maintaining your dog’s health and comfort. Poor grooming upkeep can lead to severe skin conditions, uneven gait, pain and discomfort for your dog. So it's essential that you consider this seriously.

Compatibility with Family Life

ree
  • Do you have young children? Breeds known for their patience and gentleness, like Golden Retrievers, can be great choices - but don't be fooled, unfortunately they don't come pre-programmed and they do still need training to learn to behave appropriately and safely around children (and adults!)

  • If you already have pets, look for breeds or puppies known for their sociability. But if your current dog has have training or behavioural needs, I'd strongly encourage you to address those before adding a second dog to your family.

  • Some dogs such as greyhounds may not enjoy constant interaction, which is worth considering if you have a bustling household.

Time Available for Training

Training is an essential part of responsible dog ownership. Puppies, regardless of breed, need consistent training using ethical techniques to learn basic skills, house manners, and appropriate socialisation. If your schedule is packed, consider whether you can commit to short, frequent training sessions or whether this may not be the right time to add to your family.

Adopt or Shop Responsibly

ree

If adopting from a rescue, discuss the dog’s needs with rescue staff to understand if they’re a good match for your lifestyle. Find a reputable rescue that does their due diligence to find appropriate homes and is truthful about the dog's training and behavioural needs. If buying from a breeder, ensure they’re reputable, ethical, and committed to raising healthy, well-socialised puppies. I recommend visiting an existing litter, and getting on a waiting list for the next litter; this way you can meet the mum and see her with the pups. Reputable breeders will likely have a waiting list, so you must be prepared to wait.

Choosing the right puppy sets the stage for a fulfilling life together. With the right planning and a focus on your pup’s needs, you’ll lay the groundwork for a lifelong bond filled with joy and companionship.
